Four of 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron’s pilots at Westhampnett. From left to right they are Flight Lieutenant Colin MacFie, Flying Officer ‘Cocky’ Dundas (who is wearing a pre-war flying suit), Pilot Officer Phillip ‘Nip’ Heppell, and Pilot Officer ‘Johnnie’ Johnson. MacFie, who had flown with 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron during the Battle of Britain, became a PoW after being forced down on 5 July 1941. For his part, Heppell was one of the first pilots to fly a Spitfire off the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, to Malta, in 1942. (The Andy Saunders Collection)
